Practice Good Oral Health
Also known as dental hygiene, preventive dentistry is basic to your oral health. It’s termed ‘preventive’ because it keeps situations from becoming problems. Regular dental cleaning controls plaque on surfaces and between teeth, thus removing most of the breeding ground for bacteria that cause tooth decay.
Your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment once or twice a year, as added defense against cavities (aka caries). According to the American Dental Association, professionally applied fluoride can even repair your teeth in the early stages of tooth decay, before you can even see a tiny cavity. Fluoride treatments are helpful for adults as well as for children.
We encourage you and your family to visit us twice a year for a thorough dental cleaning, oral examination and x-rays. Most insurance plans recommend this, although some suggest x-rays once a year. Whichever schedule is preferred, your hygiene visit is the front line of defense against tooth decay, gum disease and other challenges. Frequently when we discover a minor problem, it can be corrected during your visit, to save time for you.
More than just a cleaning
You’ll leave our office with a fresh, clean smile, for sure. But you’ll also have knowledge of how to maintain your dental health at home. There’s more to it than just brushing. Flossing is also very important, and there’s a right way to do that. Ask your hygienist to show you how.
We’ll gladly share new products with you. New toothpaste formulas in sample size packages, better designed brushes, new floss or picks, sometimes even dentist-approved lip gloss. You never know what you’ll find in your teeth cleaning goody bag!
